Still Life With Roses, Butterflies And Objects By P-l-joseph De Coninck (1828-1910) 48 X 54 Cm
Elegant and precious floral still life, composed around a refined set of roses arranged on an entablature, accompanied by delicate objects.
In the center, an ornamental vase or bowl hosts sumptuous roses in subtle hues - pearly whites, delicate yellows and powdery pinks - treated with a great sense of material and light. Alongside them, a finely decorated fan in the foreground adds a touch of sophistication and evokes the feminine world of the 19th century.
The composition is enriched with fruit, foliage and a few decorative elements, while three fluttering butterflies add a note of lightness and discreetly enliven the scene. The background, structured by architecture and a set of curtains, lends depth and theatricality to the whole.
The very luminous treatment, subtle and nuanced, highlights the textures - velvety petals, transparent butterfly wings, shiny objects - in a tradition inherited from the great decorative still life.
Painter trained at the Lille and then Paris schools, a pupil of Léon Cogniet, Pierre-Louis-Joseph De Coninck distinguished himself in history painting and decorative compositions. Winner of the Prix de Rome, he also developed a production of refined still lifes, in which his acute sense of composition and color shines through.
His works are today held in several public collections, including:
