Riding in a mountain landscape
Expertise : Cabinet Eric Turquin.
Oil on canvas - Dimensions : 49.5 x 48.5 cm
Elegant landscape animated by riders and walkers in a mountainous setting bathed in late-day light. The composition is organized around a vast panorama dominated by a fortress perched on a rocky escarpment, while in the foreground several figures on horseback cross a tree-lined path.
This work displays all the characteristics of the Italianate landscapes developed by Dutch painters of the mid-17th century, strongly influenced by the Roman sojourns of Nordic artists. The golden light, atmospheric effects and monumentality of the landscape directly evoke the aesthetics of the Bamboccianti as well as the influence of the great Dutch Italianate landscape painters.
The composition is particularly captivating for:
the remarkable depth of the landscape,
the subtle treatment of lighting effects,
the delicacy of the illuminated clouds,
the narrative quality of the small figures animating the scene,
and the highly controlled opposition between shadowy areas and bright breakthroughs.
The red-clad horseman at the center of the composition brings a particularly refined chromatic accent to this muted, silvery-toned ensemble.
The work retains a strong decorative quality and testifies to 17th-century collectors' taste for idealized landscapes inspired by Italy.
