Flemish School Vers 1700
Very beautiful 18th-century frame in carved and gilded wood: 112.5 x 85 cm. sold separately €1,500
In the heart of a grotto with brown and golden tones, the holy hermit appears absorbed in meditation before a crucifix, while around him unfolds a fantastic universe populated by grotesque figures, demons and hybrid creatures inspired by the tradition of David Teniers and the legacy of Jerome Bosch.
The scene is enlivened by numerous picturesque characters: a disquieting old woman, an elegant temptress young woman, monks, monstrous beings and infernal visions emerging from the rock faces. The artist plays with light and shadow effects to create a mysterious and deeply theatrical atmosphere.
This work bears witness to the lasting influence exerted by David Teniers the Younger on Flemish painting of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, particularly in his treatment of scenes of witchcraft, temptations and fantastical cave interiors.
The composition has very strong decorative power thanks to its large format, warm palette and remarkable antique carved frame with Baroque decoration.
