17th-century Dutch Frame Made Of Blackened Wood, Known As “ébénisation” – (70x62 / 40x33 Cm)

A beautiful antique frame made of blackened wood, with a broad architectural profile, characteristic of 17th-century Dutch frames intended for portraits and genre scenes from the Northern Schools.

The design features a series of deeply carved moldings, alternating between broad, smooth slopes and very finely guilloché bands. The understated presentation, enhanced by the dark hue of the wood, is accentuated by a discreet gilded inner border that highlights the artwork without drawing attention away from it.

This type of frame, highly prized in the United Provinces during the Golden Age, frequently accompanied the works of Dutch and Flemish painters. Its austere elegance and powerful architecture make it a particularly sought-after model for framing antique paintings.

The surface retains a beautiful antique patina and shows slight signs of wear consistent with its age.

NotesBlackened Dutch frames were widely used in the 17th century for portraits, genre scenes, and still lifes. Their deliberately understated aesthetic appealed to the tastes of collectors in the United Provinces, who preferred to highlight the painting rather than the ostentation of the frame. The guilloché molding and the depth of the profile give this frame a remarkable architectural presence while maintaining great elegance.
