Antique Painting, Oil On Mahogany Panel Saint Joseph Draped In Yellow And Violet, 19th Century

Antique painting, oil on mahogany panel, Saint Joseph, 19th century, Mannerist in spirit.

A moving depiction of Saint Joseph, this fascinating preparatory study captivates with the theatricality of its Baroque-inspired drapery and the virtuosity of its chiaroscuro. It is a true testament to the meticulous nature of 19th-century studio practice.

Oil on mahogany panel.

The work is distinguished by its expressive power, capturing the protective stance of a Saint Joseph likely conceived for a Nativity scene.

Full-length representation of Saint Joseph depicted as a bald, bearded elderly man, standing on a small quadrangular pedestal-like base, set against a dark background painted in a softly blurred manner. His clothing consists of a short tunic in violet tones, belted at the waist, covered by a very ample yellow-ochre cloak — a traditional chromatic association in Josephite iconography. His legs are bare, and his feet are shod in sandals with straps tied at the ankles.

The drapery is strongly sculptural and animated. The contrasting chromatic scheme is characteristic of Mannerist or Baroque influence. The presence of the small pedestal beneath the saint’s feet suggests that this may be a painted study after a devotional statuette, a common practice in 19th-century workshops.

Single-board mahogany panel, with a fine peripheral bevel on the reverse. Presumed dating: 19th century; probably an academic study or a copy after an Old Master.

Unsigned.

Overall condition: satisfactory. Small stabilized vertical split in the wood, visible in the lower part of the panel. Minor wear consistent with age and small losses to the painted surface along the edges.
