Flemish School - Frans Francken Et Son Atelier - The Crucifixion

A major scene in Christian iconography, Christ is depicted at the center, flanked by the two thieves, in a classical and balanced composition. At the foot of the cross, the Virgin Mary and several figures are visible in prayer, while in the background unfolds a lively scene with horsemen and soldiers. The painting displays a masterful use of light and shadow, with a dramatic treatment of the sky and an emphasis on the body of Christ.
The drapery and expressions are rendered with great care.A work of the Flemish school attributed to Frans Francken and his workshop (Antwerp 1581-1642). Large oak panel (100.5 cm x 74 cm), unmounted, on a giltwood frame. Restorations have been made – the frame has several losses.
This piece has been appraised by René Millet. This painting is similar to the Crucifixion of 1606 by the same Frans Francken, exhibited at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
