Attributed To Bernardino Campi (1520-1591). Lamentation Over The Dead Christ.
Artist: Bernardino Campi (1520-1591)
A scene of lamentation over the dead Christ, a painting attributed to Bernardino Campi. Campi's Mannerist style is evident here; the disproportion between Christ's small head and his elongated body is typical of this mid-16th-century Mannerist style. The faces of Saint John, on the right of the composition, recognizable by his beardless and youthful features, and that of Mary Magdalene on the left, are reminiscent of those found in the works of Bernardino Luini, thus placing this painting within the Lombard tradition, Bernardino Campi's place of origin. The stone on which Christ rests, the "stone of anointing," which can still be seen in Jerusalem today, functions as in Jean Fouquet's Pietà of Nouhans: its perspective, as well as that of Christ, gives the impression that He and the stone are descending, gliding towards the viewer. This suggests that our work was situated above an altar, figuratively depicting the Corpus Christi before it was physically presented to the faithful during Mass in the form of bread. The paint layer is sound and clean. Relined. 131 cm x 108 cm. National delivery by carrier. Bears a signature added lower left: "J. de Vos Pix. 1684"
