This is indeed a rather rare post-impressionist composition by Gaston Boucart, who here paints a lively scene near the Chasseneuil memorial in Charente. The Resistance memorial at Chasseneuil-sur-Bonnieure, Charente, was built at the end of the Second World War to commemorate the 1,465 martyrs of the Resistance and the fallen servicemen of the Charente and Charente-Maritime regions. It is both a memorial to the Resistance and a national necropolis.
As usual, Boucart employs his usual touch, and here a lovely palette in warm tones dominated by oranges, purples, pinks and browns.
I no longer need to introduce Gaston Boucart, a painter I've featured many times in my gallery, notably views of La Rochelle, Port des Barques, Ile d'Oléron and Angoulême. A key painter of the Charente school alongside Balande, Suire, Charlopeau, Péré, Maresté etc...
He is also one of the great French painters to have specialized in views of Venice.
Gaston Hippolyte Ambroise Boucart, born in Angoulême on December 7, 1878, where he died on January 18, 1962, was a French painter and engraver.
A pupil of Gustave Moreau, Fernand Cormon and Paul Gervais, he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français and became a member of the Fédération française des artistes (1927 and 1929).
Officier de l'Instruction publique, Croix de guerre, his works were acquired by the French State, the Conseil général de la Seine and the City of Paris. Some are held in museums in Rochefort-sur-Mer, Niort, Angoulême and North America
