This is a very interesting post-Impressionist composition by Gaston Haustrate, painting a port in Belgium in 1906, probably the port of Ostend. A rather early work, Haustrate employs a very powerful brushstroke, using broad areas of color and a subtle palette to perfectly capture the atmosphere of a Belgian port with grays, beiges, deep greens, reds, etc., all highlighted with black lines. Gaston Haustrate, born August 3, 1878, in Everbeek and died September 6, 1949, in Uccle, was a Belgian painter. Gaston Pierre Irénée Haustrate (without an "e" after the "a" in official documents concerning him) was born in Everbeek on August 3, 1878, to Jules Haustrate, a schoolteacher originally from Ellezelles,
where he was born in 1855, and his wife Léontine Neybergh. Gaston was
the second of four children. The Haustrate or Haustraete family,
of Ellezelles, are a branch of an old Renaix family already present in Renaix in the 16th century. Jules Haustrate, Gaston's father, died in Halle in 1922. Gaston Haustrate studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. In 1899, he became a member of the artists' association Le Sillon, founded in 1893. He had his studio on Rue du Trône in Ixelles. Gaston Haustrate married Marguerite Beaumont, a French national, in Brussels in 1903. Gaston Haustrate preferred to paint the old quarters, streets, and alleyways of Brussels, but also still lifes, landscapes, seascapes, portraits, and figures. In 1948, a retrospective was held at the Cercle Artistique et Littéraire in Brussels. Today, his works are sold primarily in Belgium and France, sometimes fetching very high prices of over €2,000, especially for his early works painted before 1910.
