Joseph Hurard (1887-1956) "the Martigues Gendarme's Hat" Group Of Thirteen, Avignon, Mattio

Artist: Joseph Hurard (1887-1956)
Very beautiful oil/panel by Joseph Hurard representing the gendarme's hat in Martigues, signed lower left + located and numbered 26 on the back. Size of the painting alone without frame 38x55cm This is therefore a magnificent post-impressionist composition with a fauve tendency by Joseph Hurard who paints here his favorite village, Martigues, and more precisely the famous gendarme's hat and of course the channel, its fishing boats and fishermen. As usual, he uses a powerful touch, with a knife, very rich in material, his entire palette, lively and colorful, his trademark which will earn him his great success. Joseph Hurard, born August 3, 1887 in Avignon and died February 18, 1956 in Martigues, is a painter. Student of Pierre Grivolas, Vionnet and Jules Flour at the École des Beaux-Arts d'Avignon. Born in Avignon in 1887, he first worked in a drugstore. Selling canvases and paints to Avignon artists, he met them on Sundays to paint with them. His talent noticed, he was part of the "Group of Thirteen" created in 1912 by Clément Brun, of whom he was the youngest. He became friends with Joseph Meissonnier and participated with the group in a first exhibition on December 21, 1912, which was a great success, followed by a second exhibition on December 18, 1913, which was also the last of the Group. In this melting pot, he frequented elders already touched by fame such as Lina Bill or Auguste Chabaud. Among the most gifted draftsmen of his generation, painting with disconcerting ease, he quickly got noticed. Unfortunately Hurard did not go to study at the Beaux-Arts, which we can regret because he would probably have been one of the greatest painters of his time. He died in Martigues in 1956. Exhibition at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris Exhibition at the Salon des Indépendants, Paris Retrospective in Martigues in 1956 Hurard is today one of the best painters of the Provençal school alongside Vidal, Chabaud, Pastour, Meissonnier, Seyssaud, Mattio, Gaussen etc... This painting on panel is in perfect condition, delivered in an old natural wood frame. Work guaranteed authentic
