Covered Pot In White/blue Porcelain From The Chinese Wreck Off Vung Tau (kangxi Period)
Rare white porcelain ciborium-shaped footed covered pot, painted with underglaze cobalt blue floral decoration. Salvaged from the Chinese shipwreck off Vung Tau in Vietnam, dated by archaeologists to 1690 (during the reign of the Kangxi emperor).
Probably planned to be re-exported to Holland via the port of Batavia - now Jakarta. This piece was probably intended to contain confectionery or sugar (expensive commodities at the time). A large glass engraved with the effigy of William III, on display at the Rijskmuseum, certainly served as a model (see last photos).
It has been cleaned of its marine concretions. Slightly matt cover due to its long stay in water, but in perfect condition.
Height: 25 cm, weight: 840 g.
