Large Blue/white Porcelain Ewer From The Hoi An Shipwreck (15th Century)
Large blue/white porcelainous stoneware ewer from the wreck off Hoi An (Vietnam).
Left "in its juice" after just a cursory cleaning. The numerous marine concretions (barnacles) have been preserved to testify of its origin.
It is complete, with no breaks or cracks. One face is lightly stained orange due to its proximity in the wreck to an oxidized ferrous object.
Height: 27.5 cm. Weight: 1260 g.
The wreck, discovered at 70 m deep and dated to the 15th century, was archaeologically exploited in 1997-1999 and its cargo of ceramics sold by Butterfields in San Francisco in 2000.
