This remarkable weapon features an iron blade, a wooden handle embellished with small decorations, and an elegant silver pommel. The set is complete, a particularly rare feature for this type of object, as archaeological finds generally preserve only the blades. The state of preservation suggests a discovery in a humid context, which has enabled the exceptional preservation of the organic elements of the handle.
.This model of dagger, recognizable by its kidney-shaped guard, appeared in the 14th century and remained in use until the early 16th century. Initially carried by the elite, this weapon gradually spread to all strata of medieval society, from combatants to civilians. Contrary to its use in Renaissance fencing, the medieval dagger was an autonomous weapon, particularly used in close combat against armored opponents, where it could be aimed at the interstices of protective armor.
The dagger originated in the Middle Ages, when it was used as a weapon of war.
The dagger comes from an old Dutch collection.
Good overall condition despite several visible misses on the blade.
