Egyptian Glass Bottle - Fayum, Vᵉ-viiᵉ Century - Funerary Archaeology, Diatkine Collection

Egyptian glass flask - Fayoum, Vᵉ-VIIᵉ century - funerary archaeology, Diatkine collection

Rare Egyptian glass flask from the Fayoum region, dated to the Vᵉ-VIIᵉ centuries CE.

Fine in size and elegant in silhouette, this object was most likely intended to contain perfumed oils used in a funerary context. Such flasks were in fact deposited in tombs, accompanying the deceased on their journey to the afterlife.

Made of green glass, the bottle features a well-marked pouring spout and a long, slender neck. The latter is encircled by a glass filé, making it easier to grip, especially with oil-coated hands. The globular base is slightly recessed.

Comparable examples are preserved in the collections of the University of Michigan (references available onthe last photograph).

Dimensions: height 12.6 cm.

The object is in very good condition, with the exception of a slight missing thread.

Provenance: Diatkine collection, Paris, constituted circa 1960.
