Roman glassware type balsamaire - 1st century - archaeology antiquity

Charming blown glass balsamaire from the Roman period, dated 1st century AD.

This small bottle, intended to hold perfumes or precious oils, was commonly used in antiquity, particularly as part of funeral rites. It features a green hue characteristic of Roman glass production, with fine bubbles testifying to the blown glass technique.

The specimen is in perfect condition. On one side, we note a fine thread stretching vertically, which could evoke a crack, but actually corresponds to a trace of stretching of the glass during its manufacture.

The piece is in perfect condition.

Height: 7.6 cm.

This piece also features a particularly interesting provenance: it comes from the workshop of sculptor Siméon Foucault (1884-1923), winner of the Prix de Rome in 1912. A resident at the Villa Médicis between 1913 and 1914, it is likely that this balsamaire was brought back from Italy on this occasion, before joining his workshop.

.

A beautiful archaeological object, both sober and steeped in history.
