Courtesan Hanazono-dayû - Japanese Ukiyo-e Print By Yanagawa Shigenobu Edo Period
Refined Japanese ukiyo-e print attributed to Yanagawa Shigenobu (1787-1832), depicting the famous courtesan Hanazono-dayû of the Naka-Oriya, from the "Osaka Shinmachi nerimono" series devoted to the elegant ladies of Osaka's Shinmachi pleasure district.
This composition, of great delicacy, presents the courtesan dressed in a sumptuous kimono adorned with butterflies (kochô), a poetic and symbolic motif particularly appreciated in Japanese aesthetics of the Edo period.
The work is distinguished by:
- the finesse of the drawing,
- the subtlety of the blue-gray colors,
- the elegant treatment of the fabrics,
- as well as by the quality of the prints and slight embossing still perceptible.
The vertical signature "Tôto Yanagawa Shigenobu" and the artist's red circular seal are visible in the composition.
Good overall condition for an early 19th-century work, with wear, light foxing, attenuation and traces of time contributing to its authenticity and charm.
Very beautifully presented under glass in a sober, elegant frame.
A refined and decorative work, emblematic of Japonism and the art of early Japanese ukiyo-e
