Bete Mask
Bete mask, Ivory Coast, wood and upholsterer's nails, 33 cm, early 20th century, old private collection (Germany), collection N. Hug collection (Paris).
Bété dance mask, in a style typical of the Daloa region. This type of mask had different functions, depending on the ceremonies involved: protocol, purification of the village, funerals or to settle social issues. This mask is particularly old, with pronounced wear on its right side, perhaps due to abandonment. It is authentic and has not been restored.
