Gelede Anago Mask
Gelede Yoruba Anago mask, wood and mineral polychrome, dry patina.
This helmet mask was danced during Gèlèdé daytime ceremonies, dedicated to the worship of Mothers and witches, to bring fertility and social cohesion to the community. Unlike night ceremonies, which focus on the religious aspect, daytime ceremonies are an open book on the life of the community. Masks illustrate everyday scenes, fables and morals. This mask depicts a maternity scene in front of a container, perhaps a washtub. The plastic design is astonishing, with only the child's head visible behind the mother's back. The mask has a beautiful patina. It is authentic and has not been restored. First half 20ème siècle.
Provenance: Ex-collection Jean Luc et Jeanine Fournier, ex- galerie J. Visser (brussels). Listed in the African Archives de Guy Van Rijn database under reference ao-0110343-001.
