Ashanti Terracotta Sculpture

Altar Ashanti head, Ghana, terracotta, 27 cm, late 19th - early 20th century, personal collection.
This type of sculpture was placed on the ground in dedicated shrines, among other receptacle heads and common pottery. It was used for libations (the hollow neck served as a container). The object has a deep patina of use. Its style is typical of the Winneba region (Ghanaian coast). An old crack is present above the mouth. This object is authentic and has no restoration.
