Lobi Bateba Statue
Lobi statue Bateba, Burkina Faso, wood, 56 cm, early 20th century, former collection of S. Zumelzu (Hyères).
Male statue from the Lobi culture, commonly known as Bateba, or an active intermediary being entrusted with a role at a ritual altar. This statue depicts a standing male figure holding his genitals with one hand. The statue has a beautiful patina from use; the wood is particularly oxidized and weathered on the lower legs. The object is of great antiquity, certainly dating back to the first half of the 20th century; it is authentic and has not been restored.
