Yoruba Altar Statue
Altar statue from the Yoruba culture, Nigeria, wood, 28 cm. This is a statue representing a warrior dressed in a weapon and holding the head of an enemy in one hand. The style is characteristic of the Oyo region of Nigeria, also known for its important military history made up of numerous conquests and wars. This type of object was designed with other pieces as votive objects celebrating the kingdom of Oyo, kept with the king. The warrior's sword was broken and glued back together. The object is authentic and has no other restorations. Note a beautiful and old patina of use testifying to a beautiful antiquity certainly dating back to the first half of the 20th century.
