Masquette Bamana - Mali, Africa
This mask from the Bamana (or Bambara) ethnic group of Mali is characterized by its elongated, angular face, dominated by a long, straight, slender nose that slopes down to a small, sculpted mouth near the pointed chin. The contrast between the smooth, dark patina of the facial features and the meticulous workmanship of the imposing headdress is striking: the latter is adorned with a multitude of parallel oblique striations, separated by a notched median sagittal ridge and underlined by a frontal band with incised geometric motifs.
