Songye Mask - Congo, Africa

This Kifwebe mask from the Songye ethnic group (Democratic Republic of Congo) is distinguished by its spectacular geometry and three-dimensional volumes, characteristic of male masks recognizable by their imposing sagittal crest. Entirely criss-crossed by linear striations highlighted by contrasting black, white and red polychromy, the physiognomy incorporates half-closed globular eyes projected strongly forward and a prominent cubic mouth.
