Statuette From Leti Island In The Maluku Islands, Indonesia; Betel Cup.
Rare ritual statuette of the Leti ancestor.
Note the bone or ivory ring on the skull, which corresponds to the typical ornaments and inlays signifying the high rank or chieftain status of the deceased; although the vast majority of Yene statues are carved in a crouching or seated position, the treatment of the slender, elongated, and folded limbs remains extremely characteristic of the rigid geometric style specific to the southern Moluccas.
This object was likely used during funerals as a betel cup for the shaman (the horn portion), probably around 1950. Height: 23.5 cm. A one-of-a-kind piece! From the estate of a traveling physician.
