A very interesting Baoulé gong (lawle), richly carved and mounted on a base.
On the hammer end, there is what appears to be a reproduction of an awalé set featuring numerous geometric figures, and on the other end of the handle—which is beautifully twisted—there are four figures or depictions of masks. The part of the mallet that strikes the gong is still wrapped in fabric to dampen the impact of the wood.
Beautiful patina.
Dated to the first half to the middle of the 20th century.
