Artist: Charles Donzel (1824-1889)
A new work by Charles Donzel, this time a superb small oil on panel depicting a riverside, signed lower left.
Size of panel alone unframed 19x29cm and 25x35cm framed.

This is a very pretty 19th-century composition by Charles Donzel, who painted this lovely, bucolic riverside around 1880. Donzel was then in full possession of his art. His brushstroke is very delicate, not unlike that of his friend Camille Corot, as is his palette, which is a cameo of greens, browns and sky blues.

Charles Marie Donzel was the son of François Donzel and Henriette Aubertin. Donzel studied music and sculpture before choosing painting. He graduated from the Paris Conservatory of Music in 1855. After his wife's death, he turned to drawing and painting. He exhibited for the first time in 1859. From 1860 onwards, he frequently in the Creuse valley, notably in Crozant and Haute-Vienne withcompany of Camille Corot, and depicted the landscapes in hispaintings. Around 1875, he even created a series of grand feu decorations for the Pouyat factory in Limoges, including plates that were much sought-after by connoisseurs. He is said to be the first to have given the name to the Crozant school; in any case, he is one of its precursors. Illustration for Gaston Leroux's novel Balaoo by Jules Donzel, based on a watercolor by his father.
He died in Paris on March 20, 1889. His brother Marie Antoine Henri Donzel, captain, and Paul Lecomte witnessed the death at the registry office. He was buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris on March 22, 1889. father of painter Jules Donzel (1865-1927), who drew inspiration
