This is a lovely soliflore-shaped glass vase by Emile Gallé, featuring a botanical design of a berry-bearing plant in shades of brown and mauve on a dark green and milky white background. The design wraps around the vase, covering all sides.
Émile Gallé, born in Nancy on May 4, 1846, and died in the same city on September 23, 1904, was a French industrialist, glassmaker, cabinetmaker, and ceramist.
He was the founder and first president of the École de Nancy in 1901.
A man of both art and commerce, he was one of the most influential figures in the applied arts of his time and one of the pioneers of Art Nouveau. He was also a pioneer in the fields of genetics and evolution as they pertain to the plant world; although his work is little known to the general public, it is highly significant, as it predates that of Gregor Mendel and foreshadowed its main principles. At the entrance to his studio in Nancy, the following motto was inscribed: “My roots lie deep in the woods[4].” The complete quote reads: “Our roots lie deep in the woods, among the mosses, around the springs
