Edouard Marcel Sandoz (1881–1971), Pierrot Carrying A Bouquet, Porcelaine De Paris. Limoges, Haviland
White porcelain decorated with black enamel in certain areas.
Height: 21 cm
In very good condition. Guaranteed authentic and from the Art Deco period.
This is therefore a very rare bouquet holder featuring the image of Pierrot by Edouard Sandoz, produced by the Porcelaines de Paris around 1930.
I say “rare” because, while the Pierrot and Colombine figures that Sandoz created for the Haviland factory in Limoges are seen fairly regularly, this one, produced for the Porcelaines de Paris factory, is extremely rare on the market.
Édouard Marcel Sandoz, born on March 21, 1881, in Basel, Switzerland, and died on March 20, 1971, in Lausanne, Switzerland, was a Swiss figurative and animal sculptor and watercolor painter.
Édouard Marcel Sandoz was born on March 21, 1881, in Basel, Switzerland. He was the son of Édouard Sandoz, the founder of the chemical and later pharmaceutical firm Sandoz (now Novartis).
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Antonin Mercié and Jean-Antoine Injalbert.
Sandoz is best known for his numerous porcelain boxes, bottles, decanters, and tea and coffee sets. He worked with various materials, including marble, bronze, and ceramics. His style owes much to Art Nouveau. He was particularly interested in animal sculpture, especially fennec foxes and rabbits, of which he created numerous depictions.
He founded the Société Française des Animaliers in 1933. His commitment to supporting his fellow artists led him to serve as president of the Taylor Foundation—founded by Isidore Justin Séverin Taylor—for nearly twenty years. He founded the Œuvre des enfants d'artistes and helped establish the Cité des Arts in Paris.
Sandoz was a member of the Academy of Fine Arts of the Institut de France.
