Greek Black-glazed Ceramic Peliké - Campania, 4th-3rd Century Bc - Archaeology

Greek ceramic peliké with black glaze - Campania, 4th-3rd century BC. - archaeology

Elegant black-glazed Greek ceramic peliké, typical of production in Magna Graecia, and more particularly in Campanian workshops, datable to the 4th-3rd centuries BC.

This piece is distinguished by the quality of its deep, glossy black glaze, showing subtle metallescent reflections, characteristic of the careful productions of this region of southern ancient Italy. The finely executed decoration features stylized palmettes, small flowers and swastika-like geometric friezes, emblematic motifs of the Greek ornamental repertoire.

.

The interior reveals an orange-yellow paste, typical of Campanian workshops, confirming its attribution.

This example also features a particularly interesting provenance: it comes from the workshop of sculptor Siméon Foucault (1884-1923), winner of the Prix de Rome in 1912. A resident at Villa Médicis between 1913 and 1914, it is likely that this work was brought back from Italy on this occasion, before joining his studio.

Condition:
Archaeologically complete and perfectly legible in its volumes and decoration. The neck is missing, but this has no major impact on the overall readability of the piece.
