Neapolitan Madonna, 18th Century
Virgins in polychrome carved wood, sulphur eyes.
These Virgins were used during processions, or in churches, chapels, oratories. They could also illustrate Bible passages for the often illiterate faithful, and make the holy scriptures more comprehensible. They were wigged, crowned and dressed more or less luxuriously, depending on the town, village or private individual who owned them.
