Pair Of Winged Angels In Silver- And Gold-plated Wood – Early 18th Century
Pair of Winged Angels in Silver- and Gold-Plated Wood – Early 18th century
A spectacular pair of finely carved wooden sculptures depicting two angels in flight.
Dating from the height of the Baroque period (17th–18th centuries), these works stand out for their sculptural dynamism and the refined rendering of movement, typical of the Italian sculptural tradition.
The figures are characterized by expressive and vigorous gestures: the faces feature delicate yet decisive features, framed by deeply carved curls. The loincloths and large outstretched wings are decorated with gold leaf, creating a beautiful luminous contrast
Technical Details:
* Material: Wood carved in the round, silvered and gilded.
* Period: Late 17th – Early 18th century.
* Condition: Good condition.
The surface features a pleasant, authentic craquelure and a patina of age that attests to its antiquity.
Minimal conservative restoration work carried out in the past.
Each angel is missing a portion of the rear leg (see photo); fortunately, these missing parts are barely visible given the sculptures’ posture.
* Dimensions: 34 x 27 cm – depth 18 cm
Use and Provenance:
Originally conceived as decorative elements for an altarpiece or a religious architectural pediment, these angels are now highly prestigious decorative pieces with striking visual impact, capable of enhancing both classical settings and contemporary interiors.
