Polychrome Wooden Sculpture “madonna And Child” – Late 18th, Early 19th Century
Polychrome wooden sculpture “Madonna and Child” – late 18th, early 19th century
An important devotional sculpture in carved and polychrome wood depicting the Madonna and Child, created between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, most likely attributable to a workshop in the Alpine region or northern Italy, where the tradition of sacred woodcarving achieved results of remarkable expressive quality.
The Virgin is depicted standing, with a solemn yet maternal demeanor: her oval face, with slightly lowered eyes and a melancholic, contemplative expression, reveals a sensibility still tied to the late Baroque style, though softened by more intimate and folk-inspired touches.
Her head is veiled by a wide mantle, embellished with gold leaf, which elegantly frames her face.
The drapery is one of the most significant elements of the work: the robe and mantle, rendered with deep, dynamic folds, create a refined play of light and shadow.
The color scheme, still largely original, alternates between intense green tones, warm ochres, and golden highlights—now partially worn away—which allow the underlying ground layer to show through and contribute to a textural effect of great charm.
The Infant Jesus, supported on the Mother’s left arm, is depicted nude according to traditional iconography, in a composed, frontal pose.
The gesture of the hand on the chest evokes a blessing or a symbolically salvific attitude.
The slightly stylized proportions and the serious face give the figure an archaic and devotional character.
Of particular interest is the presence of the contemporary wooden base, which is also decorated; it harmoniously completes the ensemble and suggests an original purpose likely linked to a domestic altar or a small chapel.
The work features an authentic antique patina, flaking polychrome, and traces of age that attest to its originality and enhance its historical value.
These signs do not compromise the sculpture’s legibility but rather enhance its character and collectible appeal.
Condition: good overall condition; wear, losses, and flaking of the polychrome paint consistent with its age; minor losses and signs of ancient devotion.
Material: carved, polychromed, and partially gilded wood
Period: late 18th – early 19th century
Dimensions: height 44 cm - base 15 x 13 cm
Provenance: Alpine region / Northern Italy
A work of intense spirituality and strong visual presence, ideal for collectors of sacred art, wooden antiques, or to enrich classically styled interiors with an authentic piece steeped in history.
