Our Lady Of The Immaculate Conception, Polychrome Wood, Spain, Baroque, 18th Century.

Wooden sculpture covered with multicolored polychrome representing the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. Mary is depicted standing, hands clasped in prayer. She stands on the globe, symbolizing her reign as Queen of the World and the Heavens. Just below Mary's feet, at the top of the globe, are sculpted three winged cherubs, underscoring the celestial and sacred nature of the scene. The globe is coiled by a serpent. Mary wears a red dress (tunic) symbolizing humanity and the blood of Christ, and a deep dark blue (navy blue) mantle (pallium) representing heaven and divine mystery. The mantle is adorned with a wide, richly gilded border and a gilded lining.
