Statue Of Saint Roch - 18th Century

Large sculpture of Saint Roch, carved and patinated walnut wood.

Saint Roch is a pilgrim, recognizable here by his pilgrim's cloak adorned with scallop shells and his staff, which he would have held in his raised hand (now lost!).

Standing on a rock, he lifts his garment to reveal his wound, and at his side stands the dog that brought him food. A victim of the plague, he withdrew from the world to avoid infecting anyone and was healed by an angel. To sustain him, his dog regularly brought him a loaf of bread while he awaited his recovery and return to humanity.

Frequently depicted after the 15th century, sculptures of Saint Roch were very popular and highly regarded. Note the vigor of this sculpture, the dynamism of the drapery, and the slight contrapposto, which give it its strength, accentuated by its size.

French work from the 18th century.

Height: 87 cm.

Some damage and losses are visible.
