Pair Of Sparrows And Flowers, Unzan, Kakemono, Japan, 19th-20th Century

Artist: Unzan
Hand-painted scroll depicting a composition in the kachō-ga style, meaning birds and flowers. A pair of sparrows is shown in flight amidst blooming flowers. The artist has created a free and asymmetrical composition with a subtle color palette, featuring pronounced blue accents, resulting in a sense of airiness and a poetic atmosphere.

Ink and color on paper.

Japan, Meiji era, late 19th - early 20th century. Inscription: 雲山作 (Unzan saku), meaning "Made by Unzan." Seal: Below the signature is a red seal (hanko) which also confirms the artist's name (Unzan). Very good condition, minor signs of wear.

Dimensions: 196 x 61 cm. Image: 134 x 45.5 cm. Width including handles: 68 cm.

Kakemono (Japanese: 掛け物 kake-mono - "hanging object"; also: 掛軸 kakejiku - "hanging scroll") - a Japanese painting on paper or silk, usually glued to a silk backing, intended to be hung on the wall. The top and bottom edges of the kakemono are attached to wooden bars to facilitate rolling, with the bottom bar (Japanese: ikugi 軸木) also equipped with projecting handles (Japanese: jiku). Kakemono scrolls first appeared in Japan during the Nara period (710-794). In traditional Japanese homes, they are hung in a niche called a tokonoma.
