Dang LEBADANG (1921-2015) Indochina, Vietnam, Hué, Paris: "Buffalo" Ink wash with brush on glossy paper; signed and dated 1954 lower right. Dimensions 21 x 27 cm Lebadang (Hoi) was born in Quang Tri, Vietnam, in 1922. He moved to France in 1939 to pursue an artistic career at the École de Beaux-Arts in Toulouse. During his studies he received prizes for painting, drawing and sculpture and obtained his first commission. By 1950, the Parisian artistic community had recognized Lebadang's work, appreciating the blend of European and Far Eastern culture and philosophies it reflected. The director of the Far East department of UNESCO commissioned him to illustrate a book of poetry, published by Editions Euros. Lebadang was first represented in the United States, in 1966, with an exhibition of his paintings at the Cincinnati Art Museum. In describing his art today, critics point out that he incorporates everyday subjects into dreamlike expressions of thought. Lebadang, an accomplished engraver, favors the techniques of engraving, lithography and screen printing. He also made lithographs using Hoi's name. Lebadang's works are exhibited in galleries in Dusseldorf, Paris, Nantes, Cologne, Cannes and Aix en Provence. His works are in permanent private and public collections, including: Rockefeller Collection, New York; Loo Collection in Tokyo; Verkerke Collection, Holland; Phoenix Art Museum, USA; Cincinnati Museum, United States; Columbia Institute of Art, USA; Lund University Museum, Sweden; Foundation Museum, Kenya; and the Museum of Arts and Letters, France.
