Buddha, Kutani, Kiyomizu, Japan, Meiji Era (1868–1912)
Artist: Kiyomizu
Japanese porcelain statuette depicting Buddha (Shakyamuni/Amida) seated in a meditative posture. The Dhyana Mudra (in Japanese: Jō-in) is a traditional hand gesture symbolizing meditation, deep concentration, and inner harmony. It is one of the most recognizable gestures in Buddhist art, associated with the moment when the Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. The figure of the Buddha is depicted in the traditional attire of a monk, consisting of robes adorned with colorful patterns representing clouds and waves (in the moriage style / enamel-on-enamel). On his forehead, the third eye is visible, and his hair is depicted in the form of the black curls characteristic of the ushnisha.
