Carved Wooden Statue Of Saint Sebastian – 18th Century
Carved Wooden Saint Sebastian – 18th Century
This 18th-century polychrome wooden sculpture depicts Saint Sebastian in a particularly graceful style. The figure is depicted in an expressive, almost dancing pose, with his right arm raised and his left arm outstretched, creating a dynamic and light silhouette.
Far from the classic image of agony, the young man’s face remains gentle and serene, showing no sign of suffering. He wears a delicate wreath of golden flowers atop his carefully arranged curly hair. Girded with a gold-tinged cloth, the saint bears a reliquary crescent inlaid on his chest, attesting to his sacred role.
A former officer of the Imperial Guard, Saint Sebastian is historically invoked as the great protector against the plague and epidemics. He also remains the patron saint of archers and soldiers. The work is striking for the elegance of its pose and the serenity radiating from the martyr’s expression, symbolizing resilience in the face of adversity.
