Jacob Frères/jean-baptiste Rode, Fauteuil d'Apparat, Consulat Period, Late 18th Century.
Artist: Jacob Frères/jean-baptiste Rode
Exceptional late 18th century gilded wood ceremonial armchair, stamped Jacob Frères rue Meslée (1796-1803) and probably carved by Jean-Baptiste Rode (1735-1799), appointed exterior sculptor, for very fine pieces, of Georges Jacob, then his two sons.
The backrest is rectangular in shape, slightly inclined and finished with a backward scroll at the top. The frame is adorned with a frieze of stylized palmettes and finely carved floral motifs and, in the center, a circular medallion with rosette.
The straight armrests are upholstered in green silk velvet.
The elegantly curved, inverted bracket-shaped armrests are adorned with acanthus leaves and plant motifs.
This curved design, which starts at the foot thimble and rises to the cuff, is a classic Jacob Frères production for official palaces (notably for the Tuileries or Saint-Cloud).
The belt is curved on the front, richly decorated with a frieze of foliage.
Superb horn-of-plenty front legs, tapered and carved with fluting, acanthus and lotus leaves. Their tops are encircled by a frieze of small flowers.
The rear feet are "saber-shaped", a typical feature of the Etruscan and Greek influence of the period.
The chair's structure is made of fairly dense beechwood covered with original leaf gilding with a beautiful patina of use, revealing the reddish plate in places.
Luxurious emerald-green silk velvet upholstery, embellished with matching braid and gold piping that emphasizes the lines of the seat and back.
Although the Jacob brothers' factory
employed its own master sculptors in the rue Meslée workshop, the ornamentation of this armchair is intrinsically linked to the great names who supplied the exceptional models, and in particular Jean-Baptiste Rode.
The Jacob Frères association is crucial in the history of French decorative arts. Based on rue Meslée, they were the official suppliers to the imperial residences under Napoleon Bonaparte.
Their style is distinguished by the transition from the lightness of Louis XVI to the monumentality of the Empire.
Their inspiration is drawn directly from ancient archaeology (Rome, Greece, Egypt).
Following in the footsteps of their father Georges Jacob, their creations are marked by highly precise technical execution, in both assembly and sculpture.
Very good state of preservation, with minor missing parts.
With its original gold leaf gilding in used condition.
Superb emerald-green silk velvet trim.
Late 18th century, between 1796 and 1799.
Stamped JACOB FRÈRES RUE MESLÉE (Photo taken with grazing light).
