Bernard Molitor, Lady's Secretary In A Study, From The Empire Period.
Artist: Bernard Molitor, Attribué à
A rare and elegant lady's writing desk attributed to Bernard Molitor (1755-1833).
Made of mahogany and mahogany veneer, this beautiful piece opens at the front with a drop-front covered in green Moroccan leather, finely framed by an original gilt roll. Upon opening, four drawers and a central niche are revealed. The lower drawer retains its two original ink bottles, each housed in its own compartment.
The writing desk rests on two front legs in the form of columns with Doric capitals and two rear legs treated as pilasters, giving it the aesthetic appearance of a cabinet. The whole rests on a simple and elegant plinth base.
This writing desk is embellished with fine chased and gilt bronze mounts, placed at the four corners as well as at the ends of the column legs. The upper surface is topped with Saint-Anne grey marble.
This piece can be compared to the work of cabinetmaker Bernard Molitor, both for the remarkable quality of the mahogany used and for its "gracefully understated" design (to borrow Mr. Leben's expression in his book on Molitor), as well as for the judicious use of finely chiseled bronze mounts.
In very good condition.
Restored by a master cabinetmaker.
Empire period.
Dimensions:
Height: 113 cm
Width: 49 cm
Depth: 33 cm
Bibliography:
"Molitor, Cabinetmaker from Louis XVI to Louis XVIII" by Ulrich Leben, Monelle Hayot Art Editions.
