Pair of gilded chased bronze and patinated bronze Retour d'Egypte torches.
The Egyptian figures, treated in the round, are depicted standing in a hieratic attitude directly inspired by ancient Egyptian iconography.
Their bodies, in black patinated bronze, contrast with the finely chased gilded bronze elements, notably their pleated loincloths and "purse" wigs ( cf. Marie-France Dupuy-Bailet in l'Heure, le Feu, la Lumière, p.146 ).
The latter hold a binet decorated with anthemions, and a dish with a laurel-leaf frieze.
The circular base is decorated with a radiating pattern of finely chased palmettes and lotus flowers, and is extended by a cylindrical pedestal.

This model is part of the "Return from Egypt" movement, developed following the Egyptian campaign and very much in vogue under the Consulate and Empire.
These decorative elements were used in particular by the great Parisian bronziers Pierre-Philippe Thomire and Claude Galle.

The heads, binnacles and frieze on the base of this pair of torches are similar to those illustrated and described in "L'heure, le feu, la lumière", les bronzes du Mobilier National by Marie-France Dupuy-Baylet, on page 146.

Epoque Empire - Consulat.
