Rare pewter oil CLOCK with truncated conical shaft and wide horizontal cupped base, fitted with its ribbed blown glass bulb encircled by a graduated hour ribbon and its hinged flap burner spout.
Height: 37 cm.
SAXE (?), early 19th c
In good condition, minor impacts and consolidations are noted and visible on the photographs. The glass bulb is original and intact
Function:
An immersed wick at the base of the bulb rests on a small iron sheet support (missing) inside the nose of the burner spout. The level of the oil being consumed as it burns indicates the time on the bulb's hour ribbon.
Some examples are fitted with two opposing spouts.
