Open Pewter Wine Pitcher - Burgundy Or Champagne, 18th Century
Free shipping within mainland France via La Poste or Mondial Relay
**************
Pewter wine pitcher, open, shouldered shape, short straight slanted foot, and quarter-round bowl. Thumb rest handle.
Fleur-de-lis gauging mark on the bowl.
Height: 22.5 cm.
Capacity: 0.715 liters.
BOURGOGNE ou CHAMPAGNE, 18th century.
This type was often called a "cellar measure" because the absence of a lid facilitated filling and serving wine.
In perfect condition and of fine quality in both material and finish.
Fleur-de-lis gauging marks have been found on pitchers from Montbard and Langres.
It is worth noting that these pitchers were the official wine measures of the Ancien Régime. The capacity of jugs used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., was supposed to be periodically checked by royal or ecclesiastical authorities to ensure the consumer received "correct measure." However, in practice, this regulation was rarely enforced, and jugs bearing gauging marks are quite rare. The metric system appeared at the very beginning of the 19th century and took several decades to become established due to resistance to change from users. Gradually, these uniform cylindrical measures replaced the jugs, which, admittedly, displayed a variety of interesting shapes characteristic of their place of manufacture, but also an infinite number of different gauging measurements from one town to another, and often even from one village to another, however close they might be. This considerably complicated trade.
Nevertheless, there was one rule common to the entire territory: the gauge of the jug determined the gauges of the sub-measures, the latter successively having a gauge half that of the previous one.
