Famous pewter set consisting of the EWER and the BASIN entitled "The Sciences and the Arts".
The ewer represents Minerva personifying Wisdom, between Science and Poetry, under the figure of Truth which forms the handle and below a bas-relief showing the Vices caused by Ignorance. On the base, we can see the allegories of Summer (Motherhood) placed under Wisdom, Autumn at the foot of Science, Spring near Poetry, and Winter (Sterility) below the Vices and Ignorance. The basin presents in the center "Fame" surrounded by a band of children supporting a ribbon bearing the names of sculptors, painters, musicians, architects. The dish is divided into four parts in which the Arts are symbolized by allegorical figures and attributes, sculpture, architecture, painting and music

Ante mortem edition from the end of the 19th century of a major work by this artist of exceptional quality of material and freshness usually observed on the works of this artist. Note that the decoration is not chiseled but comes "raw cast" from molds of a perfect quality of engraving executed by Jules Brateau.
Bibliography:
Jean-Christophe Boucaud: "Jules Brateau, 1844-1923". A copy of this work will be offered to the buyer
History:
In the great tradition of Renaissance works with relief decoration known as "Edelzinn" by the famous François BRIOT and Caspar ENDERLEIN, the talented Jules BRATEAU from the 1880s brought pewter back into fashion and offered an "Art Nouveau" interpretation without having anything to envy in the technical mastery of his ancestors. This model was created from 1887 to 1889. and was the subject of at least two editions during the author's lifetime.
This is one of the major works of this artist. Post mortem editions were produced after his death in 1923 in his molds bought by two other founders. These editions include marks never seen on Brateau's castings on which one should only see the mark in clear and the countermark "au gibet".
Condition:
A tiny consolidation at the knot of the ewer is reported
