**************

Baluster-shaped pewter wine pitcher with flared foot, quarter-round throat, acorn-shaped thumb rest, molded tongue and pin. Hallmark of François MARTIN, active since 1838: ETAIN FIN / natural pink flower/ MARTIN AU MANS.
Height: 23 cm.
LE MANS, Mid-19th century

In an exceptionally fresh condition and of very good quality of material and finish.
This measure with a generous belly is characteristic of the examples of this center and of Maine In principle this pitcher dated after the establishment of the Metric System should no longer be used because the gauge of the Ancien Régime had become obsolete, but in most regions, these "ancestors" continued to be used for measuring wine several decades after 1802. "Les pichets d'étain" by Charles Boucaud
"Les étains du Mans" by Abbé Paul Bidault
