Rare pewter goblet decorated in relief with bryony leaves and berries and the inscription: "Better the goblet than the sword" (sic).
The artist's hallmark is clearly marked on the exterior base, and the counter-hallmark "at the gallows" is marked three times on the interior base.
Model created in 1887.
Height: 11.2 cm.
Contemporary casting by the artist from the late 19th century in perfect condition.

The high quality of this artist's creations highlights two essential conditions: a mold with extremely fine chasing and a perfect casting without any reworking after demolding, therefore "as cast," like the fine productions of the 16th and 17th centuries. On this artist's works, any mark other than those indicated above (clear markings such as "ETAIN," "crowned rose," etc.) indicates a later edition. Posthumous.
Jules Brateau played with his initials when choosing his counter hallmark; indeed, phonetically, JB sounds like Gibet… Bibliography: “Jules Brateau” by Jean-Christophe Boucaud, who reproduces this model there.
