**************
Small pewter PITCHER with shoulder, flared foot and acorn thumb.
Incompletely legible hallmark of Jean-François CHENEL (or CHESNEL) received master in 1755: tree / I.CHENEL / (17)55.
Height: 11.4 cm.
Measured gauge: 0.12 liters (The theoretical gauge in CAEN at this time is precisely 0.122 liters)
CAEN (LOWER NORMANDY), Second half of the 18th century.
In perfect condition et de premier intérêt pour l'archéologie de l'étain, un petit impact peu visible est cependant signalé sur la panse.
Generally speaking, the pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime but these very small gauges were used for alcohol. Although presenting an infinite variety of shapes depending on the regions, all pitchers had to be subject to a control of their capacity and marked, as soon as their use was public. The innkeepers, tavern owners, etc. thus guaranteed that the consumer was not misled about the quantity announced.
These small gauges were produced in smaller numbers than the large ones and their small size exposed them more to accidental disappearances, hence their great rarity nowadays.
