**************

Pewter pitcher with a shouldered shape, flared foot, quarter-round bowl, lid with a central molding, and a double-sided shell thumb rest with nine spokes.
Hallmark of Jean-François PERIGEOIS, received as a master in 1698: winged heart with flames / IFP. This master died in 1734. Incompletely legible ownership mark engraved on the handle: A. /…/FISH POND.
Height: 14.5 cm.
ANGERS, very late 17th or early 18th century.

Extremely rare small gauge, unique for this center, bearing a perfectly legible hallmark. These pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime. The capacity of jugs used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., was supposed to be periodically checked by royal or ecclesiastical authorities to ensure the consumer received "correct measure." However, in practice, this regulation was rarely enforced, and jugs bearing gauging marks are quite rare. The metric system appeared at the very beginning of the 19th century and took several decades to become established due to resistance to change from users. But little by little, these uniform cylindrical measures eventually replaced the jugs, which, admittedly, displayed a variety of interesting shapes characteristic of their place of manufacture, but also an infinite number of different gauging measurements from one town to another, and often even from one village to another, however close they might be. This significantly complicated exchanges.
