Rare Pewter Egg - Metz (?), Circa 1700
Artist: Nicolas Louvain (?)
Free shipping within mainland France via La Poste or Mondial Relay.
**************
Small pewter ewer with a cylindrical body and flared rim, resting on a molded, stepped circular foot. It is decorated with two corded moldings and fitted with a thumb rest on a rectangular handle with a curved base.
Unidentified maker's mark: crescent / crowned hammer / initials N.L.
Height: 15.5 cm.
Metz, around 1700.
Daniel Allix, in "La poterie d'étain en Bourgogne" (Pein Pottery in Burgundy), attributes this mark to a Burgundian workshop, but the presence of corded moldings on this ewer would suggest Lorraine. It could be the unpublished mark of Nicolas Louvain, who became a master before 1687 and is mentioned by Bertrand Bergbauer in "Etains de Lorraine" (Pewter from Lorraine). Whatever its origin, this is a very rare and highly interesting piece of post-Gothic inspiration.
In very good condition, displaying a pleasing, even patina. However, some reinforcement at the upper attachment of the handle and some pitting on the inner rim of the neck are noted and visible in the photographs.
Depending on the buyer's preference, cleaning could restore this ewer to its original shine. The cost of this operation will not be subject to any additional charges.
