Cave Bear - Fossil Teeth And Metacarpals

A collection of teeth and metacarpals of cave bears (Ursus spelaeus), dating from the Late Pleistocene (approximately 100,000 to 11,700 years ago), from France. This now-extinct species of bear lived across much of Europe. The animal could reach up to 3.5 meters in height when standing upright and 1.3 meters at the shoulder.
Preserved on cotton, 26 x 15 cm. Beautiful patinas on the fossilized bones.
Formerly in the collection of Dr. G. Pontier (1875-1933), a French physician, naturalist, and paleontologist. Original handwritten label (late 19th - early 20th century).
